Chemistry at 50

The department calls for the help of its alumni to help future research projects

The year 2015 marks the 50th anniversary of the University of York’s chemistry department.

Eyes are on the future, however, with chemistry’s ever expanding facilities and diverse courses – the newest addition to which being Natural Sciences, to be introduced next year.

With the goal of innovation in mind, head of department Richard Taylor has set up a crowdfunding campaign via YuStart, York’s own fundraising platform, in order to support the study of undergraduates embarking upon research internships.

Taylor said: “We urgently need to establish a sustainable source of income to support our undergraduate students in taking our summer vacation research placements, this year and beyond.

“[Alumni] support will ensure the Department of Chemistry continues to attract and foster the best and brightest talent, and [they’ll] help to train the next generation of scientists who will find solutions to critical global issues.”

The campaign has already been met with exceptional generosity from York alumnus Dr Anthony Wild, who has promised to match its ambitious £20,000 target by 100%, meaning a maximum goal of £40,000.

This total would cover the living costs of 40 undergraduates over the internship period, making the scheme sustainable for the future.
