Bikes for boats

The University Boat Club is cycling the length of the country to keep competing at the highest level

The University of York Boat Club (UYBC) is the largest sports club at the University of York with more than 200 members, over half of whom are women. The Women’s squads regularly compete at large regional and national events including the world famous Henley Women’s Regatta. Alumni have gone on to represent their country with current members striving to do the same.

However, the women’s team are currently having to make do without proper resources. That’s why the Boating Club will this September be laying down their oars and saddling up for a cycling trip from  Land’s End to John O’Groats to raise £6,000 for new equipment.

Nick Dryden, the Club President, said: “for the past eight years [the women’s squad] have had to row in  the heavyweight men’s boat, which hasn’t been suitable for them at all.

“So we think, by fundraising for a brand new women’s eight, we’ll be able to help them get onto the next level, for the next ten years, to really push to advance the club.”

The club have set up a crowdfunding campaign on the University of York’s own platform Yustart.

There’s even a chance for donors to have a boat named after them if they’re feeling particularly generous…
